The Four Loves

Heard this quote last night during the Requiem Eucharist I attended last night for people who have died in the past year. My Fiance’s family lost a very special member this year; Her Memere. She was someone who was quite small and simple but she lacked nothing, as she was full of Love. During her last few days she had an amazingly clear message for us: Love. Tell those that you love that you love them when you see them. This is never done nearly as much as it should be. The following except was appropriately read during the Requiem.

The Four Loves (1960)
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change. It will not be broken; it will becomeunbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. Thealternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.
